The Drama Teacher who drank from her purse, the female algebra teacher who rode a Harley, Ms. Malato the Spanish teacher French kissing Mr. Hagey(?) the shop teacher at the train station, getting in trouble for wearing culottes, boys who were greasers freshman year and wore leather jackets who became dupers still wore the jackets the next year, watching the boys get all the National Geographic magazines in the library. Wearing angora on your boyfriend’s school ring to match your outfit of the day, wearing dimes in the oxblood loafers.

ANY OTHER INFORMATION After 30 years in the corporate rat race in New Jersey (and living way beneath our means), we left for the mountains of Colorado. We love having friends and family come to stay, and now you know how to reach us. We do lots of music – church choir, local choral society, Sweet Adelines (I’ve become an arranger) and a garage band (it’s never too late to fulfill a dream). Now that we have the time to travel, we’re making up for lost time. Breckenridge is pretty yucky in spring and fall, so we go elsewhere. We’re currently concentrating on the western USA and places we’ve never been – Hawaii, California, national parks. I had just completed a B.A. in English and entered graduate school. Since 1992, I completed an M.A. in Applied Linguistics, taught Freshman Composition and ESL Reading, became an International Student Advisor and immigration specialist in the Virginia’s Community College System and, most recently in 2005, was selected to participate in a short term Fulbright program in Germany for International Education Administrators! Although I consider fulfilling my life-long dream of a college degree and the Fulbright award as my greatest accomplishments, my happiest moment was assisting my daughter with the birth of her daughter, Isabella. ANY OTHER INFORMATION I love hiking in the mountains and traveling the globe, particularly to developing countries. Recent travels have taken me to Vietnam, Turkey, Spain, and most recently to Kyrgyzstan. I still enjoy reading when my eyes aren’t too tired from working on the computer all day. I try to keep up with technology, but am probably always behind! HIGH SCHOOL MEMORIES I still have painful memories of Ms. Karsh’s honor’s English class, though I pursued writing in spite of her. I didn’t appreciate Mr. Fortini’s history class and reading authentic texts until I took an Early American Literature class, which turned out to be the most enlightening course of my undergraduate degree and foundational in my understanding of the American psyche. Other memories are of Chem. class experiments that filled the halls with noxious odors during the lunch bells and ruined everyone’s appetite. And then there were the lunchroom fat-laden, sugar and peanut butter cookies that weighed a pound each and cost only 5 cents! Yeah! Someone, still unnamed (though I have my suspicions) stole my violin from my locker at the beginning of Sophomore year. My mother was forced to pay the school for that violin, which was quite hardship at the time. Then, at the end of Senior year, just before graduation, I was helping to inventory the orchestra’s instruments and lo and behold! The unnamed thief had snuck the stolen violin back into the instrument storage room! Fortunately, my mother kept the receipts for the payments she made to Schurz and was refunded her money shortly after the school year ended.

Are we that old already? YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT /HAPPIEST MOMENT Far and away, watching the birth of my two children was (were? Educated at Schurz) my happiest moment. I didn’t do much – it’s more my wife’s accomplishment. Yet, I felt proud and humbled by the experience (I cried – I hadn’t cried since 5 yrs old when Dumbo was separated from mother). ANY OTHER INFORMATION I still love to play basketball and softball. I have a cabin up near the UP where I go for retreat. I quit my job at 40 and took a 3-week canoe trip north of the Arctic Circle in Alaska. HIGH SCHOOL MEMORIES A prominent philosopher told me “Everything seemed so important then” I remember feeling so awed and self-conscious. Schurz was so big and everyone else seemed to know what they were doing. There were a couple of girls I was desperate to talk to, but couldn’t bring myself to say hello. I especially remember those who were friendly to me. I also remember how divided into groups people were: greasers, dupers, jocks, freaks. That all seems so superficial now. As that same philosopher said: “Then is then and now is now”

I’m happy my life has turned out even better than I dreamed as a teen. No Pulitzer Prizes or Oscars (and lots of middle age bulges and wrinkles), but a wonderful family, satisfying career, lots of exciting experiences. ANY OTHER INFORMATION (SPECIAL INTERESTS, HOBBIES, and TRAVELS) We travel a lot. (Our families are far from Lubbock!!) Have a vacation home outside of Taos, NM in the mountains. This summer, we traveled to NYC, Turkey, Phoenix, Nashville, Chicago, Cleveland, Denver, and Yellowstone National Park/ Wyoming/ Montana. In the past years, we have been to Australia, Poland, Germany, Thailand (and the Mayamar border, scary), Taiwan, Panama, and throughout the US. Jim is a college professor, so I can accompany him on trips to conferences often. Lucky me. HIGH SCHOOL MEMORIES Hearing about the JFK assassination after lunch in Science class at Beaubien Branch. Singing in girls’ and solo choruses, school plays especially Music Man and How to Succeed in Business. Wonderful, wonderful Miss Anne Rebek and cute Mr. Cohen. Working on the Schurz Times with Mr. Schiable. Lunch time butter cookies and “Tab” in the cafeteria, sophomore year during the height of Beatle mania. Those huge garage parties in the autumn before the cops came to break them up—loved the Schurz Boy bands. Tri-Hi-Y and after at SuperDawg for a coke. The BIG, BIG snowstorm senior year.

(One will take the final examination next year to become an M.D.) Keeping a few, good, close friends from high school (Jean Murphy Kamin and Sue Greene Vela). ANY OTHER INFORMATION Have visited New Zealand on 3 separate occasions and have lots of pictures and brochures if anyone is considering going down under. Hobbies include: golf, gardening, reading & promoting organic/sustainable agriculture. HIGH SCHOOL MEMORIES I wish I remembered more; but probably killed too many brain cells in my youth. Most that does come to mind involves either gym classes or eating lunch outside at one of the local ‘hangouts’. There are also a few centered around pranks, such as stuffing people in lockers for a surprise opening or playing tricks in homeroom to Ms. Peters, the Home Economics teacher. Had some great homeroom classmates!

Only thing stopping me is time and money. I moved my parents to California in 2000 from Tennessee, where they had retired for 17 years, to help take care of them. HIGH SCHOOL MEMORIES I have fond memories of Beaubien where I spent my Freshman year. It was a wonderful opportunity to ease ones way into High School and to make lasting friendships that I cherish. When I got to Schurz I hated wearing my glasses and wouldn't. I was surprised when someone told me they thought I was stuck up because I wouldn't acknowledge them when they waved at me (I couldn't see them). That was a youngster that presented a diagnostic puzzle at the age of 5 when he was only able to make a few sounds in order to communicate. When other professionals were giving the opinion that he should be sent to the school for trainably mentally handicapped students, I was strongly opposing this and informing them that he was able to draw all things in the speech room in their relative place and was improving in his ability to understand, imitate, and use speech. I was the SLP that did his entry evaluation his first day of kinder. Then I was his therapist when he came into a 1st grade developmental education special class and when he became part of a speech-language / learning disabilities class that I helped to establish. After being his therapist for 3 years I gave him free introductory Basic Programming Lessons at a tutoring center in Evanston, which I helped to establish. There were many other very interesting and rewarding experiences being an SLP in the Evanston Public Schools, but that was one of the best. ANY OTHER INFORMATION I LOVE my profession. I LOVE working and playing with children. I LOVE learning about Linguistics, Foreign Languages (esp. Spanish), Bee Keeping, Art Appreciation & History, and Alternative Medicine. HAPPIEST MOMENTS For many months our daughter and son-in-law discussed names for their baby and because their last name is Meal, we joked about naming him “Happy”. However, our daughter liked James Jacob Meal, but our son-in-law had reservations. Then luckily I was able to participate in the birth of our grandson at the hospital. To be able to caress our daughter moments after our grandson’s birth and to be holding his tiny hand when our son-in-law decided what his name would be. James Jacob Meal or as he now calls himself (just “JAKE”). Our son has participated since Junior High in many local rock bands, but has never really had the opportunity to pursue a career in music. When the band “FUEL” was looking for a new lead singer he sent in a demo for them to listen to and was chosen as one of the top thirty finalists to participate out in LA. Our son asked me to go along with him for the audition. For me to be able to see him perform with a well known group was the absolute greatest and even though he was their third choice and he didn’t make the number one spot, I knew he had finally arrived at a place, few people get to in their lives. God it was great. ANY OTHER INFORMATION My husband and I spend our weekends at our summer home in the Wisconsin Dells with our grandson Jake and I would like to restore my 1988 Fiero (YES a FIERO!) HIGH SCHOOL MEMORIES Going to Schurz was a truly memorable experience. It certainly was different than grade school, different classes and good God the place seemed so huge. Going to Harry’s in the morning and at lunch to hang out with friends. When cutting a class, it was truly a great feat trying to avoid “Timmy” the cop so you wouldn’t get detention. Working in the main office with the secretaries was great, you got to see every one going into 120 for reprimands and detention assignments. Luckily I never got caught goofing off. Also bringing Mr. Olsen and Dr. Vandenberg coffee in the afternoon was one of the many glorious tasks you were assigned along with putting mail in the teacher’s mailboxes. But what I remember most of all was trying to get through the Triangle to make a class in four minutes, the only way you could accomplish this was to have multiple lockers throughout the school or carry every single book you needed all day long. (I sure had great biceps).

HIGH SCHOOL MEMORIES I remember coming to Schurz in my sophomore year, as the school was so crowded we had to go to the Beaubien branch freshman year. I thought I’d never get used to the many hallways at Schurz. I remember being told that President Kennedy was assassinated in Spanish class by our teacher, and feeling shocked and afraid. I remember eating the delicious hot peanut butter cookies. You had to get them at 4th period lunch, as they were just out of the oven. If you got them after the 4th period, they were as hard as hockey pucks! There were several of us who used to eat lunch together every day….Vic Zwierk and Les Young, who were really nice guys, but I can’t remember them eating the cookies. I remember doing leg lifts suspended from the wooden bars along the gym walls. I think I did over 200, and had huge blisters on my hands. Oh!----and those lovely blue gym suits! I also remember playing volleyball---double court across the gym-- where I broke a finger on the net pole. I guess I had a lot of pain caused by gym, but I loved it. I remember art classes way up on the top floor with walls filled with shelving holding art supplies. I remember going steady with several guys who were always huge, and wearing their XL letterman’s sweaters which came to my knees! Oh, and the huge school rings, which I wrapped with angora so they would fit on my tiny fingers. I remember taking steno, and absolutely HATING the class and the teacher….Ms. Worm or something like that. I remember Junior U S History, and Mr. Lloyd, who was probably the best and fairest teacher I ever had. I remember being teachers’ aid for Mr. Breen, who never gave me anything to do. He loved puns. I remember being a ‘duper’ or ‘collegiate’ while others were ‘greasers’. I remember wearing penny loafers with knee socks to match my outfit, or white wool socks that became yellowed with washing with white sneakers (without being Nike or Reebok!). I remember wearing pleated wool skirts, or kilt skirts with a huge pin. Our skirts were supposed to reach the floor when kneeling, but we all wore them shorter with a coordinated sweater. I remember when others would pull the little half circle of fabric on the back of your madras shirt for good luck. I remember working after school at Commerce Clearing House, and taking the Pulaski bus to work. I remember belong to a sorority and some of the names of the gals who were in it with me. I remember my hair being brown, and putting streaks in it by using peroxide at the beach, then telling my dad, “The sun did it”. He was delighted with me over that one. I remember going to Foster Avenue Beach almost every day in the summer, and wearing a bikini! I remember graduation, and telling each other we would always be in touch, and feeling sad to be leaving that part of my life, while excited to go forward.
